East Gwent Senior League - Underwood Athletic A 2 Undy Athletic 1

MATCH of the day in East Gwent Senior League Division One was undoubtedly Underwood A’s 2-1 win over Undy Athletic.

With 15 minutes to go, Undy led thanks to a Steve Edwards goal but Dave Jackson scored the equaliser and Josh Downing scored the winner with the last kick of the game.

“Josh’s goal was a screamer,” Sean Johnson said later while Undy boss Andrew Peacock admitted it was an excellent strike.

“I’m a bit gutted we didn’t get a point, but credit to Underwood who kept going,” Peacock added.

Meanwhile, Mathern A won 8-2 at Caldicot Castle A with new signing Tudor Morgan-Huggett scoring on his debut for the table toppers.

Wayne Duffield (3), Keiron Gettings (2), Matt Jackson and Hywel Pugh scored the others to please manager Lee Baker.

“It was another good win against an improved Castle side,” Baker said later.

“We started well and scored three goals in quick succession but let in a couple of scrappy goals.

“In the second half Castle rallied and frustrated us by getting in our faces, to give it a very competitive edge.

“They had some first teamers playing which made the win even sweeter.

“Three points and we are improving every week. With such a young side that’s important. We march on.”

Baker also praised Harry Lewis for his four assists

“Harry’s been our best player bar none this season. He’s turned into our playmaker and that is a massive step up from where he was three years ago.”

Elsewhere, goals from Darren Luff (2) and Geraint Reynolds gave Tintern Abbey a 3-2 win at home to Thornwell Red and White whose manager Terry Woodward was disappointed at not gaining a point but pleased with the performances by new signings.

“We played OK and probably deserved at least a draw,” he said later.

“There were good performances from new signings Nathan Fieldhouse, goalkeeper Steve Jones, Gareth Jones and Shane Rutherford.

“Our goals were a penalty scored by Matthew Divers and an own goal.

“I thought we deserved a point and maybe three but some dubious decisions went against us but it a good game with a good bunch of lads.”

Caldicot Town triumphed 3-1 at home to Rockfield Rovers thanks to goals by Sam Hooper, Ben Lloyd and Luke Hall, to please manager Nathan Thomas after two heavy defeats by Underwood A and Mathern A.

“It was a good result after two tough weeks,” he said later.

“Some sloppy defending let Rockfield back in it but they had only 11 players and they struggled in the second half as we moved the ball quicker. It was a good result after two tough weeks.”
