In a fixture that was arranged in the last few days, Monmouth Druids made the short journey to Usk RFC to play a friendly game. The weather was perfect for rugby football and the playing surface was good and quite firm. The Druids squad was short of two or three players who would probably have started the match but never the less was both youthful and experienced. It was evident from the kick off that the visitors were better organised than the home side and started confidently. The Druids caused panic in the Usk ranks but errors and wrong options prevented scoring opportunities. From a scrum five metres from the Usk try line, a good Druids forward drive saw scrum half Dan White dive over in a match which, for him, will live long in the memory. The conversion kick failed but the Druids added to their score when outside half Jack Vaughan side stepped through near the posts for a neat try. Centre Adam Roberts converted for a 12-0 lead. Usk hit back with a 30-metre penalty goal, when the Druids were penalised for encroaching within 10 metres of a previous penalty. The Druids responded with a try following a blind side break from White. Up in support, Flanker Gareth Morgan took a short pass to cross near the corner flag. The try was not improved but more was to follow. Centre Dewi Lane fed White after a midfield break and he steamed over the home try line. This time Roberts did the business and converted to move the scoreboard to 24-3 in favour of the Druids as the half-time whistle blew. White completed his hat-trick after fine inter passing and support play by backs and forwards, but again the kick failed and the score remained at 29-3. Mid-way through the second half the Druids added to their score from a move starting in their own territory and involved several players. White was on the end of the overlap and he accelerated away untouched to touch down wide out. Again the try was not improved but 34-3 was a fair reflection of play. White was not finished and just before the final whistle he added to his try count after a flowing three quarter move. White took the final pass on the right wing on the halfway line. With no defender in sight, his pace took him away for his fifth try and a 39-3 victory. Five touch downs for him in a single match. A highly unusual and rare achievement for which he must be very pleased. The Druids moved the ball wide to the wings with swift accurate passing that often created overlaps. Generally good catching and intelligent running was the cause of the Usk demise. The forwards played their part and Callum Gleed, Will Copley, Milo Thomas and the front row unit stood out. Behind the scrum, Kessler Mobbs Morgan ran and tackled with courage and the ball seemed to follow substitute Mattie Morgan, who tidied up the play well. On the negative side the lineout play was poor and more practice is needed. Goal kicking was a problem and in a close match accuracy can be vital. As for Usk they never gave up and they fought hard and fairly.
