South East Wales Cricket League Division One - Sudbrook (252-6) beat Newport Fugitives (251) by four wickets.

SUDBROOK put the one-run defeat by Chepstow behind them to beat title-chasing Fugitives at Mill Lane on Saturday.

Home side skipper Micky Martin won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first and although the first three batsmen all made good starts, Sudbrook’s bowlers and some fine catching, kept their score within reach.

Seven of Fugitive’s wickets fell to catches with one batsman bowled by Ben Supple, one stumped by Bradley Bates and the other run out by Matt Spencer.

Supple was Sudbrook’s leading wicket taker (3-30 from seven overs) but Martin ended with 2-36 and one maiden, capturing both wickets when the batsmen had made just two runs each.

In their reply, Ross Lewis made up for one or two disappointingly early dismissals in recent weeks by scoring 94 including 12 boundaries.

He was well supported by Bates (63) and Martin (27) after surprisingly losing his opening partner Matt Kinchin for one run.

By the time the skipper departed, the target was within range although the remaining overs were decreasing rapidly.

Sudbrook lost two wickets fairly cheaply but Matt Burton (18 not out) and Scott O’Leary (3 not out) saw them home with an over to spare.
