South East Wales Cricket League Division One - Chepstow First XI (314-6) beat Abergavenny First XI (198-6) by 116 runs

CHEPSTOW ended their losing streak at Mathern Road on Saturday, beating fellow relegation-threatened side Abergavenny.

Chepstow won the toss and decided to bat first, openers Carwyn James and Dave Teague giving them a solid start until the fifth over when a heavy shower halted proceedings with the home side on 41 without loss.

When play resumed, James and Teague continued to pile up the runs and when James departed two short of a half-century, Teague soon followed, bringing Mitchell Harris and Tyler Morgan-Huggett to the wicket.

Both had good starts and although neither was able to build a high score, Chepstow batted deep and Ben Jones top-scored with 70 and Dave Bennett ended on 50 not out to help post a total of 314-6 from their 50 overs.

In reply, Abergavenny lost wickets regularly and fell well short on 198-6.

Chepstow skipper Jason Dobbie was delighted with what he later described as a “must-win” match.

“It was pleasing to see the boys bounce back from two disappointing results,” he added.

“Once we posted 314 it was always going to be tough for Abergavenny and it was great for most of the batsmen to score runs.”

This Saturday, Chepstow visit Croesyceiliog.
