Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Cricket League Division One - Chepstow (142-3) beat Abergavenny (141) by seven wickets
REIGNING champions Chepstow travelled to Abergavenny and produced a display that showed they are in no mood to give up their crown easily,
After winning the toss and electing to field, a combination of bowling and good catching restricted the home side to 141 all out from just 38 overs, a total Chepstow passed with the loss of just three wickets in 22 overs.
Dave Monk took the important wicket of Abergavenny skipper Geraint Leach without a run being scored and added William Glenn for 21, caught Dave Teague and Lewis Holley (27) caught Paul Swingwood.
Gareth Powell went for nine runs before being caught by Mitchell Harris off Swingwood’s bowling and Teague removed David Clarke who top-scored with 33 before being caught by Alyn Franklin,
Harris joined the party taking 3-23 from his 10 overs, and Tudor Morgan-Huggett and Teague mopped up the tail end.
In reply, Carwyn James made 31 with five boundaries and a maximum before he was caught by Morgan Bevans off Geraint Leach’s bowling and although Ben Jones departed for 0, Teague carried his bat for 59 runs while Tyler Morgan-Huggett (22) and Mitchell Harris (11 not out) saw Chepstow home to gain 19 points.
Meanwhile, back at Mathern Road, Chepstow 2nds went one point better as they restricted Abergavenny 2nds to 114 all out off 41 overs and then hit 118 for the loss of one wicket in the 14th over.
Two run-outs proved costly for the visitors with opener Nicholas Kinman top-scoring with 27 before Tom Pass ran him out.
Cameron Rees took the bowling honours with 3-15 from eight overs with Lewys Jones (2-23) and Tuhin Gavand 2-27 while debutant Rizan Mansoor finished with 1-9.
“Riz was the pick of the attack bowling,” said seconds skipper Huw Rogers.
“He was well supported by Cam Rees and despite a rain delay we knocked off the runs with opener Jamie Rayner unbeaten on 52 – including six fours and two sixes – and Tuhin Gavand (25 not out).”
