CHEPSTOW Racecourse's meeting on Friday 10th July saw the going good to firm on a cloudy but mild evening.
Honours were spread around a variety of jockeys and trainers.
Once again, local trainer Bernard Llewellyn supplied the winner of a longer-distance race. In the one mile, four furlong apprentices' handicap, his pair Marengo (9/2) and Petrify came to join Distant High with a furlong to go. The former stayed on under Jordan Williams to score by half a length.
Richard Hannon's two-year-olds always demand respect and his Receding Waves (3/1) took the 5f race for juveniles. Gary Mahon had the colt tucked in behind the leaders on the stands rail, and though he appeared held in fourth a furlong out, he ran on in terrific style from that point to collar Adham by a head.
All the way from the Rebecca Bastiman stable in North Yorkshire, See Vermont (5/1) travelled well just behind the leaders and took the lead with half a furlong to go.
Despite all William Twiston-Davies's urgings he only did the bare minimum in front and held on by a fast-diminishing head from Pixieleen.
There was an easy win in the one mile fillies' handicap for Stone Roses (15/8 fav). With John Fahy aboard, she led after two furlongs, setting a moderate pace until accelerating two out.
The others had no response and Michael Bell's grey filly won with Cape Spirit over three lengths away in second.
Peak Storm often runs at Chepstow and won here four times in 2013. Having shown signs of a return to form last time out he achieved his fifth win in the one mile handicap after a good battle with Plauseabella and Saint Pois, who were beaten a short head and a nose respectively.
This was compensation for Luke Morris, who had been unseated at the start of an earlier race. The 5/1 winner is trained by John O'Shea.
There was another exciting finish in the 7f handicap, with Denzille Lane doing his utmost to hold off Eastern Dragon, but neither could withstand the late run of the Andrew Balding-trained Mime Dance (2/1 jt fav).
Eddie Greatrex was niggling at the course and distance winner soon after halfway but he ran well in the final furlong to lead on the line, taking the race by a short head.
In the 6f handicap first-time blinkers made a big difference to Gold Waltz (6/1), who led soon after the start and had a two and a half length lead on the far side from over two out.
This she retained all the way to the line, where Jacksonfire came out best in a five-horse photo for the minor places. Trainer Ralph Beckett's five-year Chepstow record is now 17 winners from 52 runners and his young jockey Patrick O'Donnell is now two from two here.
