MONMOUTH Bowls Club secured their second win of the Gwent Bowls League season beating visitors Bedwellty Park from Tredegar by 5.25 shots and taking ten points for winning two rinks as well as overall.

The score of a quarter shot is unusual, but came about because Monmouth had two players drop out at short notice.

This meant that two rinks had only three players from Monmouth against four from Bedwellty Park.

The rules allow for the side having three players to make up the eight bowls per side, by having two players playing three bowls each instead of two.

However, because of the perceived advantage of having three bowls, at the end of the match, that side has to forfeit 25 per cent of the shots they score.

Monmouth were a little unlucky not to take all three rinks as well.

The rink of four, under skip Frank Derbyshire won a tight match by three shots.

One rink of three, with Tom Williams at Skip, won comfortably enough to stay ahead after the 25 per cent deduction.

The final rink of Frank Leach, Tommy Need and Haydn Holder, got into a lead that would have given them the win, leading 17-11 going into the final end.

With the deduction, the score was 12.75 to 11.

After six bowls, Bedwellty Park held one shot, meaning that Monmouth were still winning.

But with his final bowl, the visiting skip drew a second shot, giving them the rink win by just a quarter of a shot.

In Monmouthshire Bowling Association competitions, Sean Croudace and Haydn Holder won the Over 60s pairs third round, defeating opponents from Abercarn and now look forward to a visit to either Croesyceiliog or RTB Ebbw Vale in the next stage.
