David Teague swept Monmouth Cricket Club to an eight-wicket win at struggling Upper Rhondda in the Thomas, Carroll Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League.

The former Newport all-rounder struck an unbeaten 92, bagged four wickets and two catches as Monmouth climbed to second place in the Division Three table.

The 20-point triumph was pleasing for Paul Swingwood's men, who host top-of-the-table Pontymister in a crunch promotion clash at the Sports Ground this Saturday (4th August, 1pm start).

At Upper Rhondda, Pete Webb (68) and Carl Spiller (36) were the only two home batsmen who mastered Monmouth's bowling attack in last Saturday's (28th July) match.

Spinner Teague snapped up 4-39 and held two catches as Upper Rhondda were dismissed for 179 in 40.1 overs.

Ben Turner (2-4), vice-captain Dan Risk (2-30) and Swingwood (2-25) also bagged wickets and Jonathan Roberts took a catch.

In reply, Monmouth, sponsored by JD Wetherspoon, were given a solid reply by openers Teague and another ex-Newport player Matthew Jones (37).

Once Jones was dismissed, Teague, who struck 16 boundaries, and Ben Turner (22) took Monmouth to the brink of victory.

Former Llanarth youth player Henry Breeze (16 not out) joined Teague and the duo saw Monmouth home in 40.2 overs.

Teague deservedly collected the Ancre Hill Vineyard man of the match award for the second successive game.

Umpire David Williams and first-team scorer Mike Roberts sponsored the match balls.
