SIR,

In an age of so much negativity, I would like to reassure the people of Monmouth that they are in safe hands.

When my husband Peter fell ill on a Sunday, I called the out of hours service, who talked to me and activated a doctor to visit.

They advised me to call 999, should my husband's condition deteriorate further before the doctor arrived.

It did, and I did.

A paramedic arrived very quickly, followed by an ambulance, followed by a doctor, all within half an hour.

They were all calm, competent and kind, and transferred my husband to Nevill Hall.

Nevill Hall Emergency Admissions immediately sprung into action on his behalf.

We have been totally overwhelmed by the standard of care delivered to Peter and humbled by what they managed to achieve for him, although immediately busy.

Their care and consideration for me, constantly keeping me informed as to what was and might happen, and allowing me to stay with him throughout, has been unbelievable.

There is no way that we can even thank them.

They saved Peter's life, enabling him to survive long enough to be transferred to the cardiac intensive care unit at The Heath, where the amazing level of care shown to him throughout is continuing.

I am writing this letter in the hope that I may improve people's confidence in the brilliant people and facilities on our doorstep.

Susan Nickells
