A WAR veteran from Monmouthshire says he would like to see his memoirs be published, but just cannot afford to do it.

Leighton Bowen, who is weeks away from his 94th birthday, keeps his memories of the Second World War in two folders at his Usk home.

Written after some gentle persuasion from wife Mary, Leighton's story is one of a young man from Monmouth who finds himself a prisoner of war in one of Nazi Germany's infamous stalags.

Leighton's memories of the war are combined with diary entries made at the time and letters and telegrams to and from his parents.

"I would like them to be published but I just can't afford it, he said.
