SIR, When Waitrose first came to Monnow Street it received the blessing of The Monmouth Chamber of Commerce on the conditions that it did not charge for parking and that it would not include a coffee shop. It has now reneged on both of these promises. We are now confronted with a very inconvenient system for car parking charges and a withdrawal of the parking facility for Chippenham Surgery. Waitrose even tried to claim that the surgery had a car park. It is only very small and for the use of their staff. In direct competition with other Monmouth businesses it has now started to take in dry cleaning and to sell horticultural products. The manager wheels out the phrase "enhancing the customer experience" in support of all their changes. This is a joke as we now have a store with significantly less shelf space for groceries as a result of including the coffee shop and moving the paper and journal section. Not only this but there are now narrower isles and high shelves that are inaccessible to shorter customers. The management have plainly not talked seriously to its customer base and is not aware of its responsibilities towards the town in which it trades. WS Catling (Monmouth)
