Usk Island Play Park is set to receive long-awaited improvements after County Councillor for Llanbadoc and Usk, Tony Kear, raised concerns over the site’s lack of investment, following its exclusion from the grant funding allocations announced in May 2025.
The play park, situated in Woodside next to the River Usk, has not seen significant upgrades for over eight years, despite being a popular destination for families, residents, and visitors. Cllr Kear recently questioned at the MCC Full Council meeting in June the Cabinet Member for Equalities and Engagement about the urgent need for action and has since been in discussions with Monmouthshire County Council’s Grounds Team to agree a programme of improvements.
Planned works will begin in three weeks’ time and will be delivered on a phased basis to minimise disruption. The project will include power washing, repainting equipment, renewing damaged carpet flooring, and installing new “duo and inclusive” swing seats.
“The Island is a hugely popular area, but it also holds a personal resonance for me,” said Cllr Kear. “My late father played football here for Usk AFC in the 1960s, and I spent my own childhood on some of the equipment that still remains today. But when I brought my grandchildren here, it was clear that the play area is tired and in real need of a complete overhaul. Subsequent discussions with residents have only cemented my worries and strengthened my determination to make changes.”
A 2019 Play Assessment Project survey reinforced these concerns, showing that the play park scored zero in seven out of 14 categories and ranked 84th out of 109 play areas across Monmouthshire.
Although there is currently no capital funding available, Cllr Kear has begun exploring alternative sources, including National Lottery grants. He hopes local residents and businesses will rally behind the project, as they did with the successful community-led improvements at the Scouts Centennial Hall seven years ago.
“My role as a County Councillor is to make a difference to the community I represent,” he added. “I am determined to see this children’s play park raised to the highest possible standard for local and visiting families today and generations to come.”
