SIR,
Trellech United Community Council recently held a meeting at the Babington Centre to discuss its future.
The meeting was well attended by local residents and representatives of the Busy Bodies Playgroup, and everyone was clearly interested in the current situation. Several people explained how much hard work had gone into saving the centre 18 years ago, and expressed their deep concern about its potential closure.
Under the direction of the TUCC Chairman, discussions took place regarding how the community could pull together to support the centre and make it financially viable. Frank Kemp (acting Chairman to the Trust) also talked about the Babington Trust, the role of the trustees and the background to the centre.
It was acknowledged that the building is regularly used by the playgroup, providing valuable income. However, the nature of the activity and decor for a playgroup means that it potentially detracts as a venue for other large events, such as parties and weddings
It was also agreed that it is vital for events and the playgroup activities to work alongside each other for the centre to be successful.
It was suggested that repairs be made to the centre in order for it to be more appealing for potential hirers. Finally, it was decided that the best immediate action would be to re-instate the centre's social committee, which would comprise two or three of the trustees alongside a group of local residents.
The social committee should then concentrate on social activities and the creation of revenue – and indeed, the possibility of organising a raffle is now being examined.
At the end of the evening, attendees were invited to leave their names and contact details and to state whether they would be interested in becoming a member of the social committee, a trustee or would instead be prepared to become a 'friend' to the centre by helping out when required.
Many people signed up to be a 'friend', and one person was interested in becoming a trustee. However, only three people have raised an interest in joining the social committee, and it is anticipated that for this sub-committee to work effectively, at least a further five local residents would be required.
Therefore, if anyone is interested in becoming a member of the social committee, a trustee (a further trustee will be required in late June) or would just simply like to help out now and again, please contact the existing trustees at [email protected]">[email protected].
Although the number of people who attended the meeting was very encouraging, it is still vital that local residents be prepared to support the centre by attending events and offering their skills in organising future activities. Without local support, the centre will not survive. Use it or lose it!
