COUNCILLORS for Mitchel Troy and Trellech, Richard John and Jayne Mckenna have undertaken speed monitoring on Common Road in Mitchel Troy after residents raised concerns about speeding vehicles.
Part of Common Road in Mitchel Troy has a 20mph limit due to its residential nature, but the road is also narrow and has almost no pavements.
The two councillors arranged a trial of speed monitoring equipment during a Monday morning rush hour earlier this month.
During the informal trial, almost all vehicles were travelling between 15-25mph, although a couple of vehicles were clocked travelling around 26-28mph; no vehicles were clocked in excess of 28mph.
Cllr Richard John said: “Residents have raised concerns with us that many vehicles were travelling in excess of the speed limit in this residential area, so we arranged some informal speed monitoring to assess the situation for ourselves.
“Using a speed gun, we were able to clock a vehicle’s speed before they spotted us and reacted to the speed gun pointing at them, so we’re confident that our data is accurate.
“If any residents in Mitchel Troy would like to set up a community speed watch group with us, we would urge them to get in touch.”
Cllr Jayne McKenna said: “All the vehicles that were travelling in excess of 20mph started to slow down when they saw us and had also put signs explaining what we were doing.
“Community speed watch groups don’t aim to fine people, but to encourage motorists to moderate their speed to improve road safety.
“For volunteers there is a small-time commitment for the training and ad hoc monitoring, but it can encourage regular offenders to moderate their speed. We would urge any residents interested in taking part to email them at [email protected] and [email protected]
