Andrew Edward Gardiner has written a very personal account of the Korean war and the heroic part the Gloucestershire Regiment played in the eventual outcome.
To Bait The Dragon is the result of years of research into the famous Imjin Battle and the political events surrounding it in 1951.
The book concentrates on the Glosters' battle at the River Imjin and explains how a small regiment of British soldiers was able to halt the advance of a ferocious Chinese army.
Mr Gardiner believes that the world was in greater danger of nuclear war at this point that at any other time in history. He explains that the purpose of the book is to acknowledge the work of Prime Minister Clement Attlee and his Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin in stopping the use of nuclear weapons to halt the Chinese. Instead a platoon of young soldiers and their officers 'baited' the Chinese into battle when they could so easily have captured Seoul. The author believes that the debt the world owes to the Glosters has never been fully expressed by the British Government.
He hopes that this book will go some way to acknowledging the phenomenal courage displayed by the isolated companies of the Glosters as they faced the Chinese hordes.
Mr Gardiner has written and published this book himself. Copies of To Bait The Dragon can be obtained by writing to Andrew Gardiner at Little Meend, Crossways, Ruardean, Glos, GL17 9XB.
