DESPITE THE BIG FREEZE, a great weekend of squash was on display at Glan Yr Afon, Cwmbran early January.
A total of ten different clubs from South Wales were represented at the competition.
Former Monmouth Comprehensive pupil Tejwant Singh Saran, now a student pursuing a sports coaching degree at UWIC, won the 'A' Grade competition beating lecturer Greg Dainty, also of UWIC, 3 - 0 in the final.
A close semi final encounter saw Tej scrape through in the fifth game narrowly defeating his opponent by two points.
In the final, Tej dominated from the start using his full array of shots which resulted in his opponent tiring quickly. Sensing this, Tej continued his relentless style of play to land his first men's graded title. Tej dedicated this victory to his beloved grandfather who recently passed away.
Also representing Monmouth Squash Club in the men's 'B' Grade competition was Tej's Father, Monmouth squash legend Avtar Singh Saran. A veteran of the game, Avtar rolled back the years and put in some vintage displays during the course of the competition. Using all his experience and guile, he made it through to the semi-finals where he was narrowly defeated 3-2.
