Smiths Auction Rooms in Newent had yet another eventful couple of sale days on September 25-26. Many top prices of the day were predictably found in the jewellery and gold section, with a gold coin bracelet selling for £5,500 and a gold Krugerrand pendant selling for £2,300.

Other notable results in this section included a 22ct gold gentleman’s wedding band which made an amazing £1,100 and a diamond encrusted leopard brooch which sold for £2,000.

A vintage Cropp & Farr coiled snake bracelet also sold beyond the owners’ expectations when it made £880 against a £600/£800 estimate.

The silver section also sold strongly with some impressive results for a selection of Georgian pieces such as an elegant pair of George III sauce tureens hallmarked for London 1781 which made £920 and a set of four Georgian silver decanter labels for Port, Mead, Madeira and Brandy making £620. Other interesting items included a rare George III urn form sugar vase which made £440 and a tiny late Georgian vinaigrette which made £150.

There were a few surprises to be found on the second day of the sale where a vast variety of interesting collectables stimulated competitive bidding throughout. A good collection of early Kingstonian football programmes exceeded all expectations when they sold for £1,150. The group included large selection from the 1920’s featuring a variety of local opposition teams such as Hampton Court Palace and various local charities. They sold to a London based Football Programme dealer after a prolonged internet battle with a buyer from France and another from Manchester.

Another unexpected result on the Friday was when an unnamed 18th century brass sundial sold for £1,850 – once again far higher than had been predicted. A French 18th century violin sold for £860 and a group of fine antique lace made £340. In the toy section an unusual Orobr tinplate clockwork battleship sailed away at almost double its estimate at £150 and two 1960s Sindy dolls sold for £110.

Smiths Auction’s are now inviting entries for their forthcoming sale on the 13th & 14th of November. The sale includes a wide variety of antiques and collectables as well as ceramics, glass, silver, pictures and furniture. With Christmas just around the corner the sale features a special section for Jewellery, Gold & Watches. Please telephone 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk
