Sir, I agree wholeheartedly with the ladies who commented recently on the lovely wildflower displays around Monmouth, those responsible deserve a big credit. However, on a sad note, I was of late given a welcome boost each time I drove the A40 between the Raglan and Abergavenny roundabouts. I refer to the stands of beautiful hollyhocks that were growing in the central reservation. Alas they are gone, presumably cut down along with the weeds that were removed from this part of the road. Was this necessary? Could this lovely splash of colour not have been spared? Derek Rigby (Penallt)
