SOUTH Wales Fire and Rescue service has praised the tireless efforts of its staff and crews following an extraordinary rise in wildfires across the region.
With accidents up by more than 450 percent compared to 2024, the service highlights the critical role of frontline response, prevention work, and collaboration with partners in tackling the growing threat of wildfires.
Between January 1st and May 31st, 2025, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded to 928 wildfires, a 483 percent increase on the same period in 2024.
This sharp rise has placed significant pressure on crews, joint fire control and support teams.
Despite the demands, SWFRS has demonstrated remarkable operational resilience, deploying specialist wildfire units and equipment across the region to protect lives, homes and ecosystems.
Area Manager Matt Jones, Head of Operations, said: “This year has already been incredibly challenging. The scale and frequency of wildfires have tested our resources and our people.”
“But thanks to the commitment and professionalism of our crews and control room staff, we’ve responded quickly and effectively to protect our communities.”
SWFRS is not only reacting to wildfires but also leading the charge on prevention and preparedness through operation firebreak, its long-term strategy to reduce the frequency and impact of these devastating incidents.
They have delivered a wildfire education programme in Cwmbran including 14 sessions which were delivered in schools and youth clubs,
SWFRS have provided guided advice to ensure that in the summer months, wildfires are reduced.
With summer approaching, SWFRS is warning that hotter, longer dry spells are likely to increase the risk of wildfires even further.
The public is urged to take simple precautions:
Avoid using BBQ’s or open flames in the countryside
Never discard cigarettes or matches on the ground
Report fires immediately and keep a safe distance
SWFRS remains fully committed to protecting South Wales through proactive prevention, community outreach and swift emergency response.
