YOUNG and old came together at St Mary's Church in Monmouth this week to remember lives lost at sea.
The Monmouth Branch of the Royal Naval Association RNA) held a special service on Monday (1st November) to honour the ship's company of HMS Monmouth, which sank during the Battle of Coronel in 1914, 96 years ago to the day.
Leading cadet Harriet Salmon and ordinary cadet Jacob Salmon, both of Monmouth, laid poppy wreaths at the service.
They were joined at the ceremony by Monmouth mayor Jeana Hall and consort William Hall, standard bearer
The service was taken by Rev David McGladdery, with Naval Chaplain Gerald Leach reading the RNA prayer. A two minutes' silence was immaculately observed.
"HMS Monmouth and HMA Good Hope sank with all hands on board," said Rev McGladdery.
