SIR, The recent report stating that schools must not be built next to motorways must apply to the proposed site for Monmouth's new comprehensive school. Filters can be built into the building but pupils spend a lot of time outside during breaks and the lunch hour, often in bad weather. There are also extensive sports grounds which include football pitches, tennis courts, a running track etc. The fumes from the carriageways that practically surround the site can endanger the health of students that are prone to asthma and other respiratory problems. This problem was not apparent when the present school was built. Building the new school on this site would be to ignore this report and place Monmouthshire County Council responsible. Would our council care to comment? Name and address supplied
