Following the death of a motorcyclist on the Raglan southbound sliproad, calls are being renewed for a meeting with Mr Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, to inspect the Raglan junctions with officers from Operations, Strategic Road Network Division.

The sliproad was closed to traffic both ways on Saturday morning (May 31st) until 7pm following the crash involving one black Ducati Multistrada..

Despite a motorist administering roadside CPR, the rider, a 27-year-old man from the Kent area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Blue light agencies, along with the air ambulance were in attendance.

This now makes two incidents within the space of a week between the A449/A40 junction to the collision blackspot at the Monmouth Road crossover and the clerk for Raglan Community Council, Adrian Edwards has renewed calls for urgent safety measures and to implement all the “quick wins” published in the A40 Raglan Bypass - Safety Study of June 2024 without any further delay.

Raglan Community Council have not seen GoSafe or any other traffic management on the A40 in Raglan despite a Welsh Government representative saying on May 16, “We have committed to working with GoSafe as well as signing this limit on permanent signs to potentially better influence driver compliance.

The community has seen the temporary 50mph A frame signs, but some of those signs have been removed.

In a joint statement, Cllrs Richard John and Jayne McKenna said they were “devastated to hear of the sad news that a fatality occurred on Saturday at the dangerous junctions of the A40/A449 (on the slip road from Raglan to Newport).

“We, along with colleagues from Raglan CC, Mitchel Troy CC, our local MS’s and MP have campaigned tirelessly to Welsh Government to ask for measures to be put in place along this stretch of road to make it safer. It shouldn’t take for someone to lose their life for them to wake up and listen!! Thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the motorbike rider

The Senedd Member for South East Wales, Laura Anne Jones, had released a statement confirming her fears that there would be a fatality at the nearby junction between the A40 and the village itself and urged the Welsh Government to take serious action.

“With the second incident in just seven days having resulted in the blue light agencies in attendance, we don’t have time to sit back and wait,” she had previously said.

“We need the Welsh Government to take this as seriously as we do, because otherwise, I fear, it’s only a matter of time before we see a fatality on the stretch.”

Following the news, Ms Jones released a further statement.

“This is devastating news, and my thoughts and prayers go to the man’s loved ones. We have to act now to ensure the A40 junctions at Raglan are safe for motorists.”

This is the second incident in as many months which has seen a motorcyclist lose their life in Monmouthshire.
