SIR

We are a group of residents in Monmouth with concerns over the impact that the A40 is now having on the town and those who live here.

We have challenged the Welsh Government and Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) in respect of noise and air pollution caused by the heavy traffic on the road as it passes through Monmouth.

We met recently with MCC officers to discuss the implementation of an Air Quality Action Plan and we are pressing for Monmouth to be declared an Air Quality Management Area.

Poor Air Quality is believed to be responsible for 29,000 premature deaths each year in the UK, more than obesity and alcohol combined.

These figures are ratified and accepted by Government, moreover the Supreme Court declared in May this year that the UK Government is failing in its legal duty to protect people from the harmful effects of air pollution.

We will be holding a meeting to update all of our supporters on the outcome of our recent meeting with MCC and to discuss our priorities and action plans for the way ahead.

If you would like to come along to this meeting it will be held at the Royal British Legion Club in St James' Street this Thursday 10th October at 7.15pm.
