Town councillors have backed Gwent Police to restore order in Monmouth after a fight last Friday (16th September) left two officers in hospital.
Two officers responded at about 9.50pm to reports of a fight involving a large group of youths, both male and female. The fight is thought to have started on Chippenham Fields.
The officers, believed to be a man in his 20s and a woman in her 40s, approached the group and tried to arrest a man but were assaulted.
Both sustained head and facial injuries and both required hospital treatment.
Five men aged 16, 18, 19, 22 and 25 from the Monmouth area were arrested on suspicion of assault and violent disorder and have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Two boys aged 16 from the Monmouth area were arrested for public order offences and both have been cautioned.
