DRIVERS using the Chainbridge on the B4598 at Kemeys Commander between Usk and Abergavenny face extended weight restrictions after safety concerns were first raised almost two years ago.

Monmouthshire Council has introduced a temporary 7.5-tonne limit after the bridge was deemed not strong enough to carry heavier vehicles safely due to a deterioration of the hanger rods where they connect into the bridge deck.

The restriction will come into force on May 13 and could last up to 18 months, while further assessments and repairs are carried out on the historic bridge.

The order affects the entire120-year-old bridge, which spans around 100m.

Council officials have warned that a further closure order may be needed, with the possibility of the bridge being shut completely for up to two years.
