MORE than 700 homes in Usk saw their electricity supply cut off due to what the National Grid has called the “accidental damage’ of high voltage underground cables.

The incident was first reported to the National Grid just after 2pm on Tuesday, May 12, when 724 homes experienced power outages after workers cut through the wires at a site near the town centre.

More than 570 of those properties had their power restored within the hour, while engineers continued to work at the scene, but hundreds of townspeople were still disconnected well into the evening.

The last of the properties was finally reconnected just before 8pm, having spent nearly six hours without power.
