Lovers of railway journeys and the old wild west might like to consider two, scenically spectacular, 2020 rides from Chicago across the USA.

The first on The Texas Eagle carries passengers from the Windy City to San Antonio and the scene of the famous Battle of the Alamo while the second, on the Texas Chief, runs all the way to Los Angeles, via Santa Fe in Texas and The Grand Canyon.

Beacon travel writer Nigel Heath and fellow journalist and travelling companion Peter Gibbs were lucky enough to enjoy almost the best of both worlds when the Texas Eagle ran from Chicago to Los Angeles before a change of schedule.
