MADAM, Bigsweir Bridge and Toll House, built in 1825 is an outstanding, elegant landmark in the Wye Valley and a fine example of man's ability to combine art and function in the context of a beautiful environment. No wonder it is classified as a listed building/ancient monument. Recently more than £500,000 was spent carefully renovating and repainting it to restore it for us all to continue to use and appreciate well into the future. However, some see it as an ideal advertising hoarding, plastering it with posters, banners, stickers and boards of all sizes. Smart or not, it's all unacceptable flyposting. One sign encourages yet more and many appear long before an event and remain long after. Some are local, others from much further afield but none are acceptable. It goes on all year and is particularly bad through the summer, just when we have most visitors to the Wye Valley from all around the UK and the world. That is disgraceful. So no more tat on Bigsweir Bridge, please! Ashley Thomas (Monmouth)
