A Monmouth councillor has received numerous complaints about people parking on the Monnow Bridge.
Town councillor Jamie Treharne has been in touch with residents who are fed up with cars illegally parking on the Monnow Bridge, specifically near the gate house.
He told Monmouth Town Council (July 26) as well as Police Sergeant Atkinson—who was also in attendance—that there can often be cars parked there all day, on the double yellow lines.
He explained: “By the time it’s been reported on the My Monmouthshire app to enforcement officers there’s a good chance that by the time they get there—if it’s not the same day, it’s the following day—the vehicle isn’t there.”
He told the town council that: “It’s getting a lot of people’s backs up, quite frankly”
Adding that he’d like to see the presence of more enforcement officers in the town and if that meant that Monmouth Town Council (MTC) had to subsidise that cost, then so be it.
Police Sergeant Atkins said that local councils have paid for enforcement officers before but have found the process difficult.
He added: “If you pay for them, you might you expect them to be there all the time, but that can’t happen because they may have other duties to go elsewhere. There may be problems about where they go and when they go.”
Even though enforcement officers may be subsidised by the town council, the council would not have the authority or expertise to manage them.
He added that he can make sure officers are deployed and go on patrols, to hopefully deter illegal parking.
Roger Hoggins from Monmouth County Council (MCC) added that he can talk to the county’s civil enforcement manager about having people spend some more time in Monmouth.
