A LOCAL Monmouthshire man is climbing over 4,000 steps for Fire Fighters Charity as this year marks 25 years since the 9/11 Twin Tower attacks at the World Trade Centre in New York.

Owen Batty started a Just Giving page raising proceedings for this worthwhile cause, whilst representing honour for the courage and sacrifice shown by firefighters on September 11, 2001.

In total, Owen is climbing 4,142 which is the total number of steps in both of the Twin Towers combined in full fire kit and BA set at Ludus Gym in Monmouth which is located in Singleton Court Business Centre on Wonastow Road Industrial Estate.

So far the Just Giving Page has raised £140 with a target of £500 with many backing his ongoing efforts to raise money for this charity.

Nearly 3,000 people from more than 100 nations lost their lives on this day. Included among them were 343 members of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) who lost their lives while responding to help others.

Since 2001, more than 400 FDNY firefighters lost their lives to illnesses associated with the toxic conditions they were exposed to during the rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero.

Hundreds of firefighters were determined to reach those who needed them during this time. Their courage, sacrifice and dedication helped save countless lives in what still remains one of the devastating attacks in history which has left lasting impact the world.

This challenge will enable Owen to honour their memory while raising vital funds for the Fire Fighters Charity which provides lifelong support to serving firefighters, retired personnel, fire and rescue staff, volunteers and their families.
