STUDENTS from Haberdashers’ Monmouth School embraced an opportunity to jet off across the globe to South Africa for a once in a lifetime sports adventure.

The first XV Rugby and first XI Hockey teams at the school recently returned from South Africa, a trip filled with competitive sport, cultural discovery, personal growth and memories which will last a lifetime.

They set off on their travels on October 17 and travelled across Cape Town, Johannesburg and Sun City absorbing the opportunities available both on and off the field.

The tour was made even more special thanks to the support of tour kit sponsors Dragon Signs, Route Media and Concept Electrical, whose generosity helped provide the bespoke kit worn throughout the trip.

For both teams, the opportunity to play sport in a different country was a highlight. The rugby and hockey squads took part in a programme of competitive fixtures, challenging themselves against new opposition while representing Haberdashers’ Monmouth School with pride.

Team spirit

The tour strengthened friendships across both teams, with pupils supporting one another throughout the journey and creating a fantastic atmosphere wherever they went.

Lots of adventures

The students made the most of their trip and enjoyed a range of experiences showcasing the very best of South Africa. The group travelled by cable car to the summit of Table Top Mountain, taking in breathtaking views across Cape Town and its spectacular coastline.

Visits to Robben Island and Langa Township provided valuable insight into South Africa’ history, culture and communities, giving pupils a deeper understanding of the country beyond its sporting traditions.

The adventure didn’t stop there, students embraced the opportunity to surf on South Africa’s coastline, visited Boulders Beach to see the famous African penguins and enjoyed two safari experiences where they encountered some of Africa’s wildlife in their natural habitat.

When fixtures and excursions were over, there was still plenty to enjoy. Pupils spent time relaxing together, playing padel, unwinding by the pool and sampling local cuisine, all while strengthening the bonds that make school tours such a valuable and memorable experience.

Reflecting on the trip, students spoke of the incredible sporting opportunities, the friendships formed and the unique chance to experience a different culture. The combination of competitive sport, teamwork, resilience, adventure and exploration made the tour far more than just a sporting excursion.
