A serious road traffic collision has renewed calls for improving the safety of a Raglan black spot.

Gwent Police received a report of a road traffic collision on the A40 at around 2.40pm near the Old Monmouth Road. Two cars were involved and four people were taken to the Nevill Hall Hospital for treatment. There were no fatalities from the collision.

Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay said: “I was appalled to hear of the latest accident at this interchange. I’ve been calling for improvements to the layout of this junction for many years now. It’s quite clear from the frequency and seriousness of accidents that the current layout is substandard and needs redesigning. The junction dates from the time when this stretch of the A40 was originally built as the Raglan bypass and traffic was a lot lighter - it is quite simply no longer fit for purpose.”

He added: “The Welsh Government has consistently ruled out a new roundabout due to the proximity with the A40/A449 interchange but there is a desperate need for some sort of solution. Traffic flows are only going to get heavier with the completion of the Heads of the Valleys dualling and sadly it’s only a matter of time before we see a fatality. I am renewing my calls on the Welsh Government to look again at this hazardous stretch of road and develop an appropriate solution.”

The A40/A449 interchange and the area around it is the site of semi-frequent road traffic collisions, some of which involve heavy good vehicles.

On 9th July the Beacon received reports of another serious collision involving a heavy goods vehicle and a Peugeot 207. The driver of the Peugeot suffered neck injuries.
