Sir,

I would like to add my voice to the Agincourt Square debate.

Sir Simon Jenkins, chairman of the National Trust, has written of Monmouth that it is one of the three most pleasant towns in Wales. And he should know.

This is due to its 'character', a quality based on its architecture (in no small part due to the genius of its early 19th century architect GV Maddox) and to the liveliness of its streets and inhabitants.

A few years back, the market in Agincourt Square was an essential ingredient.

It is still heartening to see the shops and restaurants in Monnow and Church streets surviving, however precariously, to serve us in spite of the cheap and convenient allure of the supermarkets.

Long may they continue to do so, along with the colourful private enterprise of market stalls. And uptown, not downtown.
