MADAM,
David Rowlands (Would flyover help?, Beacon letters 1st August) calls for the ’desperate measure’ of a flyover for the A40 at Monmouth Bridge.
There is a less disruptive and more feasible alternative. This is to link the A466 Redbrook Road to the A40 by following the route of the present derelict railway line and iron bridge. This new road and bridge would pass south of the school playing fields and Troy Gardens to join Portal Road, which in turn would be linked to the A40 just south of the tunnels. Only farmland would be affected.
At Monmouth bridge the existing traffic lights would become redundant. A new road might then be built linking the bridge to the underpass adjoining Monmouth Yacht Club, thus maintaining easy access to Monmouth for local traffic.
