CATHERINE Fookes MP, Lynne Neagle MS and Mary Ann Brocklesby, Leader of Monmouthshire County Council have written to the new Plaid Cymru-led Welsh Government seeking assurances that it remains committed to delivering Magor Way Station within the agreed timeframe.

The letter, addressed to Mark Hooper MS, Deputy Minister for Transport, follows concerns raised during the recent election campaign that the station project could be scrapped.

Earlier this year, the previous Welsh Labour Government confirmed that work would begin on five new stations across South Wales.

Magor and Undy Walkway station is expected to be the first to be built, funded through £445 million UK Government investment in South Wales rail.

The station has also been the focus of long-running local campaigning by community groups including the Magor Rail Group and local councillors.

Securing a new station for Magor has also been one of Catherine Fookes’ key campaigns since being elected as MP, regularly raising the project through speeches and questions in Parliament, and in meetings with UK and Welsh Government Ministers.

Catherine Fookes MP said: “Magor Walkway Station was confirmed earlier this year following years of relentless campaigning by local residents, councillors and the MAGOR group. The project is now backed by massive UK Government investment in South Wales rail. These plans must be thrown away.

“People in the area are depending on this station. It will help ease congestion on the M14 and provide a greener way to travel to Cardiff, Newport and Bristol.

“I will continue to press Plaid Cymru for answers and for a cast-iron commitment to the new railway station. In the meantime, I will do everything I can to make sure this station is built as soon as possible.
