ON Wednesday 8th July, the first session of a series of computer coding workshops was launched at Chepstow Library.

The afternoon was fully booked with nine schoolchildren taking part in the workshop, which is part of the library's Idea's Garage scheme.

The children were taught the basics of HTML coding, with some picking up the necessary rules remarkably quickly and others enthusiastic about creating their own webpages.

Volunteers were essential in allowing the workshop to run with Robert Hickman running the session and Ben and Callum helping out individuals.

All the students created their own webpage and thought that coding clubs are a good thing for libraries.

The children really enjoyed the session with comments including: "I'm interested in engineering.

"Because there is no coding in my school, and if I wanted to work in robotics when I'm older, then doing this is a good idea."

Organisers have said: "The children were enthusiastic and picked up what they were shown really quickly.

"They all created their own webpage within the hour's session. With a longer session, they could have created even more"

The workshops are set to start regularly in September. This will allow young people to have the opportunity to create all sorts of games, apps interactive animations and more.

Equipment for the coding club was provided by grant funding from The Carnegie Trust's Library Lab programme and CyMAL.
