SIR,

When I was working my afternoon at the Blue Cross charity shop, a couple came in who live in Cwmbran and often come to enjoy a day in Monmouth.

The wife was wondering where to eat. The husband joked 'you won't get a McDonald's in Monmouth', to which I replied 'there may be one soon'.

They were both horrified at this and said Monmouth can't have a McDonald's because Monmouth is special and should be left alone.

I am sure every visitor, resident or tourist would agree with them.

They were right – Monmouth is special, it is special because it hasn't been overdeveloped.

I have only been living in Monmouth for a few years and I have been captivated by its charm, its old buildings and its history.

McDonald's and any other inappropriate development should go and be built in a more appropriate town.

If Monmouth is to remain special and charming, leave it alone.
