Fownhope Reserves 0 Ross Town 3 After an enforced break due to the bad weather over the last few weeks, Ross Town returned to defend their undefeated league record on Saturday, travelling the short distance to Fownhope. In windy conditions Ross came away with a well-deserved, hard-fought 3 - 0 victory. Several key players pulled out at the last minute with injuries, however manager, Dan Morris, did have top goal scorers Justin Halfpenny and captain Spud Jenkins back. Ben Timmins dropped back into his usual position at centre-half, along with Greg Burford and Casey Morgan, with Andrew Denzley coming into midfield to replace Aidan Cook. Ross started the game in strong fashion with Shaun Aston and Lee Walker causing the home side all sorts of difficulties down the wings. The two strikers of Mark Parnham and Justin Halfpenny were running the home defence all over the place. Ross created several early chances to make the breakthrough but they were unable to convert these chances. Parnham went close with a well struck shot, then Denzley made himself space inside the box, only to put the ball over the cross bar from three yards. It was only a matter of time before Ross scored. On 15 minutes, the ball was played out from the back by Morgan, who fed Burnham in midfield to play the ball out wide to Parnham, who took on two defenders. He then passed a delightful ball to Halfpenny, who finished clinically putting Ross one up. Ross continued to dominate the game and were causing the home side difficulties all over the pitch in particular at set pieces, again there were several near misses. On 25 minutes, Ross won a corner, and Denzley delivered another excellent ball into the box. The home side were all at sea and allowed Morgan a sight of goal, which was well blocked by the home defence. But the ball fell kindly to Captain Jenkins who side-footed home from six yards. This was Spud's 10th goal of the season to put him just one behind top goal scorer Halfpenny. It seems as though this is a two-way battle for the golden boot. Ross continued to create chances throughout the rest of the half but the players were unable to get the third goal which would kill the game off. Conditions deteriorated in the second half, with the pitch cutting up and the wind increasing, which did not help either side. Ross continued to play much of the game in their opponents' half, but could not score a third goal. The occasional attack by the home side was cleared up well by the back three who were putting in another strong performance and protecting Morris's goal well. Parnham going close on several occasions and Burnham had two shots blocked which looked destined for the net. Ross made two early changes, Aston was replaced by Alan Bain, and the injured Timmins was substituted by Ian Phillips. However, this did not change the way Ross were playing and they continued to create chances. On 60 minutes Ross eventually scored the third goal they deserved. Denzley whipped in an excellent corner and the home 'keeper, under pressure from Morgan, pushed the ball into his own net. Ross did have several more chances to increase the scoring but were unable to find a way past the home side's 'keeper. Ross could have won by several more goals and credit must go to players who after a four week break were back to winning ways. Andrew Denzley who came into midfield and had an outstanding game, and Paul Burnham, in midfield, controlled the game and played several key passes. Mark Parnham, up front, did not give the home side's defence a minute's rest for the whole 90 minutes. Ross Town: Dan Morris, Shaun Aston (Alan Bain), Lee Walker, Greg Burford, Casey Morgan, Ben Timmins (Ian Phillips), Paul Burnham, Spud Jenkins, Andrew Denzley, Mark Parnham, Justin Halfpenny (Pedro Parry) The Mighty 8 Pool Club Man of the Match was Paul Burnham for a superb performance and work rate, with hardly a misplaced pass all game.
