An exciting project to commemorate the sacrifices made at home and abroad during the First World War has been launched in Monmouth.

Commodore Toby Elliott, President of the Royal British Legion in Monmouth, presented a proposal to Monmouth Town Council recently.

He explained that the aims of the project will be to bring together individuals and groups of all ages to find ways to understand what the effects of the First World War were on the people of Monmouth and to commemorate the sacrifices which were made.

The town council voted to 'adopt' the project and a steering group has been formed to co-ordinate activities and events.

Following the first meeting of the group, Commodore Elliott said: "We want to invite all groups and individuals who would like to become involved in this project to contact us and register their interest.

"We already have some ideas about the types of events and long-term legacy of the project, but none of these will be set in stone.

"Indeed, as the group becomes fully formed, and ideas begin to be developed, we expect that our objectives and aims might change.

"We see our schools and museums having a major contribution to play, but there are many potential contributors we hope will come forward."

The chairman of the recently-formed steering group, Brian Ramsey, said: "There is no doubt that the First World War was an absolutely horrific experience, not just for those who went to war, but for those who stayed behind as well.

"This project will look at all aspects of this awful conflict and how it affected the people of our town."

It is anticipated that the first full meeting will take place on Wednesday 19th February.
