AN engineer from Llanvair Discoed is taking up the London Marathon challenge to raise money for St David’s Hospice.
Paul Barnston, 45, was inspired to run the marathon after his good friend was diagnosed with cancer.
Since the diagnosis Paul has run several half marathons to raise money for various charities but is raising the stakes next year by tackling the full London Marathon.
Paul said: “A few years ago my friend was training to cycle across the east coast of America to raise money for a cancer hospice.
“Half way through his training he was suffering extreme fatigue. After tests, ironically, he was diagnosed with head/ neck cancer.
“After seeing him go through horrific treatment, I just had to do something to help him raise the money that was needed to help the hospice.
“My whole outlook on life changed.
“I took up running and have since run four half marathons in the last two years to raise money for Velindre Hospice, St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford and St David’s Hospice.
“Since then my friend has made an amazing recovery thanks to the wonderful treatment he received.”
Paul has now applied to run the London Marathon 2016 and has been offered a place by St David’s Hospice.
“I just want to give something back to these wonderful people who offer vital care and support to patients with life threatening illnesses and their families.”?If you’d like to donate to Paul’s challenge, visit: uk.virginmoney
