A FEARLESS fundraiser is running the Severn Bridge Half Marathon in August for a charity close to her heart. Lucy Thomas, from the Forest of Dean, was diagnosed with Encephalitis Lethargica in 2003, a disease that causes the brain to swell and affects ones ability to walk and talk. The disease also has one of the highest mortality rates. Prior to her diagnosis, doctors thought Lucy had had a breakdown but after several tests, Lucy was diagnosed with the disease. At this stage Lucy wasn't even able to walk. Lucy's family were told it was unlikely she would survive, and even if she did, she would need 24 hour care. Ten years on from the diagnosis Lucy is getting ready to lace up her daps and run the 13.1 mile half track for the Encephalitis Society. Lucy said: "I've been training since the beginning of March for the marathon. "This just shows that if I can go through to the other side, then so can others."
