Beacon reader Irene Dennis-Jones called in to the Beacon office with this 1950s cartoon that she found while sorting through some things at St Marys church . It is a cartoon of notable Monmothians which she thought might be of interest.

The page of cartoon caricatures of the towns’ most prominent people features Major Reade, Supt Lewis, businessman Tom Preece, ‘popular and successful businesman; Cllr Howard Bowen, cricketer, famous golfer and band leader; Cllr Mrs Oliver Jones, first woman mayor for Monmouthshire; Charles Preece of the Butchers Arms; Mr Lennox-Sheppard of Monmouth’s picture house; Mat Pugh, a popular newsagent; ‘The big three’ -Reggie Webb, secretary of Mon RFC, Mr Farthing, chairman of rugby football club and Mr Mackie, vice-chair; Rev Owen Jones, sportsman, parson, schoolmaster and comedian; Alan Swain, optician; Sid Dobbs, the ‘sporting’ postman; Mr French, town’s baker and confectioner; and Arthur Gibbs, town crier.

Do you remember any of these? Who do you think should feature in a modern-day version of this? And is any artist willing to recreate this for today’s prominent townsfolk?
