David Kenny reproves me for not facing the facts. I have no quarrel with him, except to point out that facts do change all the time.
Who, for example, would have thought, since his letter was published (We need to face facts, 2nd November), that there would be such a stupendous ‘bust-up’ nationally with the tabloids disgracefully attacking the three judges who were asked to clarify UK law in a new situation. I am old, but cannot remember anything to equal it in recent years.
What their decision did was to confirm that Parliament cannot be bypassed in such a matter as this. That ugly tabloid reaction was then topped up by Nigel Farage growling about unleashing mobs onto the streets. It’s worrying because it’s altogether too close to the ‘blackshirt fascism’ that my parents witnessed in England before the Second World War, with the Daily Mail as the recurrent villain. And so as it continues to unfold, David might agree with me that there is a time to speak up.
