Wye Valley Music’s next concert, on Sunday, July 19th, at 4pm in Chepstow’s Drill Hall, is a summer celebration of klezmer and traditional music from the Balkans, Türkiye and beyond.
She’Koyokh (a Yiddish word meaning “nice one” are a London based seven-piece, virtuosic, versatile and prize-winning ensemble who are celebrating 25 years of performing in Europe's most prestigious concert halls, TV appearances, live sessions on BBC Radio 3, gigging at festivals such as Glastonbury and WOMAD and performing at weddings.
With a sumptuous mix of Romanian violin, a wild swirl of klezmer clarinet, jazzy guitar licks, virtuoso accordion, driving double bass and dance-inducing percussion, plus the sweet and passionate voice of acclaimed Istanbul-born singer Cigdem Aslan, expect a late afternoon of exhilarating and invigorating music!
She'Koyokh are a life-force to be reckoned with. All seven members of the ensemble are virtuous musicians, each absorbing, performing and enjoying the rich folk music traditions of countries from across the world. They combine breathtaking instrumental skills with lovely vocal performances of well- known songs and traditional pieces in Turkish, Serbian, Bulgarian and Yiddish. Their music is a melting pot of culture and style, from 19th-century Eastern European Jewish wedding music to festive music from the Balkans, Greece, and Türkiye.
