The Wye Valley Music concert on Sunday, March 22nd at 3pm in St Briavels Church is the annual RWCMD Showcase, an opportunity to enjoy performances from some of the talented young musicians who are studying at our local conservatoire in Cardiff.
Violinist Sanne Heaven is the recent winner of the coveted Concerto Prize and this year’s line-up once again features Stephanie Cheung, who was born in Hong Kong, started taking piano lessons at the age of three and has won prizes in competitions and festivals in Hong Kong and the UK. Stephanie enjoys playing a wide range of solo repertoire from Baroque to Contemporary and is also a dedicated chamber musician and accompanist who has performed in prestigious venues in London, Italy and Hong Kong.
Programme: Beethoven Sonata quasi una Fantasia in Eb Op. 27 no 1 (Ray Chi, piano) Shostakovich Cello Sonata Op 40 (Mvts. 1 & 2) (Lilly Willcocks, cello; Ray Chi, piano). Beethoven Sonata in Eb Op. 81a (Stephanie Cheung, piano) INTERVAL Bloch - 3 pieces from Jewish Life (Prayer-Supplication-Jewish Song) (Lilly Willcocks, cello; Ray Chi, piano) Brahms Piano Quartet in G minor Op 25 (Sanne Heaven, violin; Sam Wilson, viola; Derin Topgul, cello; Stephanie Cheung, piano).
Brahms Piano Quartet is a monumental work that culminates in the fast, furious and rhythmical Gypsy Rondo, a thrilling finale to this wonderful piece. Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata in D minor was composed during 1934, a period of emotional turmoil in his personal life, reflected in the powerful impact of the music.
Supporting the development of young professional musicians is an important part of Wye Valley Music’s mission as is our partnership with the Royal Welsh College and the opportunity to hear some of the stars of the future.
Tickets £18, WVM members £15, Under 25 £2 at wyevalleymusic.org.uk.
