Wye Valley’s next concert on Sunday, May 10th at 3pm in St. Briavels Church, brings together two of the best known, most talented, and versatile local performers in a recital about the American Sound. Flautist Sarah Waycott and pianist Olivia Dance have previously played at Wye Valley Music concerts in duo recitals with other partners – attracting enthusiastic audiences and huge appreciation for the quality of their playing, their innovative approach to repertoire and their superb ability to communicate with audiences.
Olivia Dance began piano lessons at the age of eight. Performing in festivals, competitions, and concerts during her childhood inspired her to pursue music as a career. She studied at both undergraduate and post graduate level at Royal Northern College and now enjoys a busy career as a solo performer, leading choral work and teaching.
Sarah Waycott is a versatile flautist, cellist, conductor and teacher with many years of experience as a professional soloist and ensemble musician. She studied at Bath Spa University and as a postgraduate at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Sarah enjoys choral conducting and she shares her love of a diverse range of music styles with several local community choirs.
On May 10th, Sarah and Olivia are presenting a programme exploring French-American musical connections at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. These connections enabled a cross-over of cultures and musical styles spanning the decades and resulting in the “American Sound.” But how “American” is the music of America and how much is rooted in the streets and salons of Paris? This concert includes work by well-known composers and one or two who will be welcome discoveries for many. Familiar names include: Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré, Jaques Ibert, Aaron Copland, Astor Piazzola and George Gershwin.
