SIR, On the 19th of July my father was involved in the three car, one lorry pile up on the dual carriageway near Dixton roundabout. Fortunately my dad came out of the accident with minor cuts and bruises, but was in shock from taking the full force of a lorry from the rear. An explanation from the lorry driver to my dad was that he did not see any vehicles braking in front of him, but when he did it was too late to brake, hence the crash in to the rear of the car. My dad had to have time off from work, several appointments with GP and Physio, while trying to sort out legal issues surrounding the accident. Monmouth was at a stand-still for well over an hour, with no traffic able to move from the tunnels up to dixton roundabout. So here we are 11 weeks down the line and Monmouth is at a stand-still yet again. A tanker lorry has been involved with a car, which then had to have its roof cut off, one can only assume that this person w as unable to be freed with out this happening, the trauma of which must have been awful. When are the local council or someone higher going to take notice of what is happening with the amount of accidents happening on this stretch of road. Surely someone should stand up and say enough is enough. My suggestion would be to have more than one set of traffic lights on this stretch of road; there should be lights approaching the tunnels, and again another set of lights before the roundabout. I am sure I am not the only person who when leaving work in Monmouth can be sat at Dixton roundabout to come on to the dual carriage for what seems like forever, the reason being that there is no gap in the traffic to get across on to the roundabout, because vehicles are hammering around it. I appreciate that this would cost a huge amount of money, however surely it would be cost effective, if it would save lives and reduce the amount of accidents. Maybe there needs to be speed cameras approaching the tunnels and the roundabout with measures in place to penalise these motorists, or police patrolling this stretch of road with cameras. Anything is going to be better than what is happening now, which is nothing! Monmouth requires traffic calming measures now. Concerned Monmouth resident
