On the sideline every Saturday at Monmouth Town FC, the Under 8s parents eulogise how great their skills are/ were.

In 2009, a bunch of dads decided to get together and challenge each other to a football match, and with Monmouth being on the border and the players more or less equally divided as English and Welsh – a new tradition was born.

Organiser Kevin Johnson said: "As a thank you to St David's Foundation for all their support during my illness in June 2008, and to allow the older generation of footballers in Monmouth to show their skills, we decided to run a game between the two countries that both divides and unites Monmouth – England and Wales".

Now in its third year, this has become a hotly-contested game that causes locals to revisit or alter their birth certificates and also gets discussed in the pub for weeks after the event.

England won the first event, Wales the second and this year will be as keenly played between dads – each of whom has to provide over £50 sponsorship and a raffle prize.

To date the games have raised around £4,000.

Pete Jones, manager of the Wales Dads, and Ian Morgan, manager of England Dads, are both busy recruiting and training.

Spectators are welcome to come along and cheer the dads – the game will kick off at 5pm on 22nd April at the Sports Ground.
