A STAFF member from Bridges Community Centre is taking part in the Swansea Half Marathon to raise money for two charities who support children with disabilities and their families.

On June 7 Emma Howick is lacing up her running trainers to take part in the half marathon this summer for both of the charities close to her heart.

Emma is raising proceedings for Quest Busters at Bridges Community Centre and Ready Steady Go, an activity club for children with autism.

“This challenge is very close to my heart because my own son, Harry, has severe autism and learning difficulties,” said Emma.

“As a family, we know firsthand how difficult it can be to access mainstream clubs and activities. These two amazing organisations have provided opportunities for Harry to feel included, accepted and supported, while also giving our family a sense of community and belonging.”

As well as being a parent Emma also works as the Autism Family Support Service Coordinator within Bridges Community Centre so she sees everyday how much these services mean to so many families across Monmouthshire.

“Running a half marathon is completely out of my comfort zone. I am definitely not a natural runner,” she added.

“I only started running last June as a small hobby with my border collie, Gizmo. What began as a way to get out and clear my head soon turned into something much bigger thanks to the encouragement and support of some fantastic ladies I’ve met through Caldicot Running Club.

“They pushed me to take part in a couple of 10k races, and somehow I’ve signed up for the Swansea Half Marathon.”

Emma is currently training three to four times a week, in preparation for the big day which is slowly approaching.

“I don’t think people realise just how much physical and mental preparation goes into something like this. There are days when it feels tough, exhausting, and overwhelming, but every mile I run is for the families and children who benefit from these wonderful charities.”

Quest Busters and Ready Steady Go have made huge differences to families throughout Monmouthshire, creating safe, inclusive spaces where children with additional needs can be themselves.

Quest Busters support families across Monmouthshire who have a child aged between six to 17 with additional needs. The charity support by holding several diverse range of events throughout the year. They try to provide opportunities where children can participate in positive experiences.

Some of the activities they have offered are circus skills workshops, online after-school cook-along clubs, aerial bungee dancing.

Ready Steady Go provide after school and holiday activity clubs for children ages three to 14 with autism and includes focusing on social interaction and confidence building.

Emma’s motivation and determination is reflected in her continued journey which is doing for great causes.

“Any support, donations, or shares would mean the world to me and will help these charities continue the amazing work they do,” said Emma.
