This latest Pontypool and Newport League game saw Monmouth Druids defeat Cwmbran with much to spare.

The Druids backs and three quarters combined successfully to defeat the visitors by 19 points to three.

The older Druids pack bossed the younger Cwmbran eight and set a platform from which the Druids backs took off with relish.

The kick off saw Cwmbran awarded a penalty which they failed to convert, and the referee throughout the game saw fit to penalise the Druids much more frequently than their opponents.

The opening play saw the Druids take the initiative and strong driving play and quick ball caused real problems for Cwmbran. A break from a tap penalty by home scrum half Mike Hall set up a sweeping move which just failed to break the Cwmbran defence.

For all the Druids' effort and skill, the only scores of the first half were from penalty goals. Captain Dave Brace kicked three and the Cwmbran full back landed just the one from numerous attempts.

The second period saw a continuation of Druids pressure and stubborn resistance, mainly from the Cwmbran pack.

The Druids finally scored a try which came straight from the training ground.
